This can also be done without changing the shim stacks, in many other ways, but without giving away trade secrets what we are doing here is making the suspension softer or harder to suit the individual.
Dr Shox aims for a setup which is plush and comfortable on the first part so as not to feel small braking bumps, rocks, roots, or pot holes, then firm enough through the middle so as not to blow-through at medium speed or ride too low at the front. Then the last part is firm enough again not to blow-through and bottom on high speed terrain like high speed bumps, jumps, G-outs or drop offs.
Over the last eight years Dr Shox has been testing with all kinds of riders from clubmen to the best riders in off road motorcycling and has optmised set-ups with WP, Showa, KYB, Öhlins, Sachs, Marzocchi, Fox – pretty much all brands of suspension.
Unlike many other suspension companies Dr Shox himself tests all the sponsored riders bikes, not just at our own test facility but in all different conditions and terrains all over Europe.
As all the manufacturers bring out their new models (off road models only) Dr Shox is invited to test them as a test rider / journo for ‘MOTO Magazine’.
So by the time the new bikes are in the shops Dr Shox has already tested them!
By changing shims, bleeds, lifts, drilling, springs, oils, oil volumes, clickers and sag, with all the different brands needing to be changed in different ways, Dr Shox now has a great understanding of all the suspension brands and manufacturers’ bikes available today.
Although bikes generally come set for the average guy (or lady) who rides at average speed in reality everyone is a different weight, different speed and some bikes come set harder and some softer, some of you ride very fast some very steady. So it is quite possible that your bike is not set right for you.
